Avoid These TikTok Rookie Mistakes That Will Get You Banned

Written by Kate Pauline | October 29, 2022

Can you imagine how annoying it would be to have TikTok say your account has just been banned from the platform? Chances are, brands may be making some TikTok rookie mistakes — without even knowing it.

While TikTok is a hugely popular app with millions of users and, therefore, more popular than ever with brands, posting is not without its risks. When not careful, a brand can easily make mistakes that will get them banned from the app.

In this article, we'll list some of the most common TikTok rookie mistakes to avoid for brands that want to keep using TikTok safely and effectively.

1. Posting Inappropriate Content

This should be a no-brainer, but posting inappropriate content is one of the quickest ways to get banned from TikTok. This includes nudity, sexual content, violence, and other offensive materials. If it's not worth showing to audiences, don't post it on TikTok.

Brands must ensure that they're mindful of the content they're posting. Remember, every post represents the brand and the company — it speaks a lot about them. One wouldn't like to damage their reputation by posting something.

Best to plan out content to foolproof your posts and ensure that someone else takes a look before you post to ensure it comes off as you intended. Another tip? Chasing trends doesn't always mean posts are going viral.

2. Spamming Comments or Hashtags

Just like any other social media platform, TikTok hates spam. If a comment is found spammy, or if there are too many hashtags used, accounts run the risk of getting banned.  Brands need to make sure that comments are genuine and well thought out.

Remember, less is more on TikTok. Keep hashtags and comments concise and to the point. Brands don't have to go overboard to get noticed. A few, relevant ones, go a long way.

3. Posting Duplicate Content

Posting duplicate content is another quick way to get banned on TikTok. With this, it’s hard to avoid reposting someone else's content or posting the same video multiple times especially when this is user-generated content. However, if brands aren’t careful in doing this, they’ll likely get flagged for spam.

Best to stick to original content, as much as possible. However, in instances when posting someone else's content, brands need to make sure to give them credit. This is a good way to avoid getting banned and it also helps build relationships with other TikTok users. (Yes, build a community on TikTok)

When reposting a video from influencer brands are working with, or from customers, brands can now use the "repost" feature on TikTok. This can easily give brands and accounts the power to share someone else's video while still giving them the proper credit. Other features such as Duets can also be used.

4. Using Copyright Audio Without Permission

With so many trendy audios to choose from on TikTok, it's tempting to just use any audio to make videos pop. But using copyrighted music without permission can get actually get accounts banned from the app. Remember, brands aren’t like regular users. The rules are different when a brand is doing something for a commercial purpose.

There are a few ways to get around this. Brands can either create their own original audio, find royalty-free music, or get permission from the copyright holder. Best to research and find some music that is free to use.

Also, it is best to add audio from TikTok's approved commercial list directly. This way, brands can be sure that they’re free of getting into any copyright trouble.

5. Sharing False or Misleading Information

TikTok is cracking down on false and misleading information. With this, brands need to be extra careful in the type of content they’re posting. TikTok is very strict at implementing this, which is actually good for the app. Brands need to be extra mindful when posting and sharing information that may not be true, or info without solid sources or proof.

Essentially, make sure that the content is accurate and up-to-date. It pays to double down on research before posting, and only post information that comes with facts. Post only accurate and up-to-date information.

The Bottom Line

TikTok is a great way to connect with new people and share your creativity. But if you're not careful, you could get banned from the app. Brands are now using TikTok, and like other users must be extra careful with the type of content they're posting.

In short, make sure that the content is appropriate, original, and accurate. If you're not sure about something, it's best to err on the side of caution. By following these tips, you can avoid getting banned from TikTok and continue growing your presence on the app.
